This one needs no introduction so we’re just going to dive into the details of what’s included in the Scharffen Berger Chocoholic’s Overdose…
Starting from the top:
- Chocolate Tasting Squares Box ~ 48 squares of extra dark, bittersweet and semi sweet chocolate. This box alone would make a good gift! To yourself.
- Apron ~ so you don’t get chocolate all over yourself (not that that’s a bad thing)
- Cocoa Powder ~ Two canisters of cocoa powder, one sweetened (to drink!) and one unsweetened (for baking!)
- Baking Bars ~ Two baking bars, one 70% cacao, which you can eat straight, and one 99% cacao, which you could also eat, but that would make you insane, so we recommend you use this one for baking.
- Essence of Chocolate Cookbook ~ We could have give this cookbook away by itself, it’s so gorgeous with almost 400 pages of chocolate recipes, from “intensely chocolate” Chocolate Chocolate Cake to “hint of chocolate” White Velvet Cake (a recipe contributed by Rose Levy Berenbaum!). And it’s not just sweets. There are savory recipes for soups, barbcue and, of all things, salad. As strange as it may sound, we also love the fittingly luxurious feel of the thick, matte pages.
- Cacao Nibs ~ Perfectly roasted cocoa beans that have been broken down into little crunchy bits. They’re supposed to be good substitutes for roasted nuts or chocolate chips in baking, but we eat them straight.
- Chocolate Baking Chunks ~ One bag of semi-sweet at 62% cacao and one bag of bittersweet at 70% cacao
- Chocolate Bars ~ Eight bars of Scharffen Berger chocolate. There might have been nine bars.
Okay. Yeah, so there were nine bars. *blush*

How amazing is all of this?! We’re not sure what it’s worth, but we’re estimating the total value to be, oh, about, a bazillion dollars.

I have quite a few diet restrictions and high standards for food. So when I created the perfect non-dairy and gluten-free fudgy brownie with chewy edges and a crisp top, I fell in complete chocolate love. Scharffen Berger helped me do this. When I haven’t found it in the stores and tried to remake the brownies with an alternative chocolate they always fall short. I would love love looooove this amazing prize!

My favorite chocolate treat is a cup of extremely high quality cocoa warmed with organic 2% milk and a dash of Himalayan pink salt. The trick to a good cup of hot cocoa is really the chocolate. Most brands you’ll find in a grocery store have sugar as the number one ingredient and cocoa is listed at 5 or 6! Read the labels and reconnect with a REAL cup of hot cocoa this winter!

I love Scharffen Berger chocolates-they’re fruity and rich without being bitter. I make a small hot chocolate every night with their unsweetened baking cocoa and their sweetened cocoa mixed together. I add a pinch of cinnamon and use hot water to keep the fat low. Finish it off with a bit of soy creamer and it’s richly satisfying while also being super healthy. Those chocolate anti-oxidants are great for keeping the skin wrinkle free too!

What, you say? You’ve never heard of them? A Canadian treat, they were started in Western Canada in a town called Nanaimo.
It’s kind of like a triple layer bar: the bottom layer is a chocolately coconut crust, the middle layer is a creamy icing, and the top is a thick layer of hardened chocolate! YUM!

Mexican Hot Chocolate Snickerdoodles?? Heaven!
Chocolate polenta pudding cake. Dear god, I need never eat another chocolate cake again.
I got this recipe 30 years ago when my children were in pre-school and it has been my go-to recipe for a chocolate treat ever since!
Brownie Cupcakes from Jack & Jill Playschool
2 cubes or ½ lb. butter
5 oz. Semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 c walnuts, toasted until fragrant, then chopped coarsely
1 c flour
1 ¾ c sugar
4 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
pinch salt
Melt butter with chocolate chips over low heat in a medium saucepan. Remove from heat but leave in the saucepan.
Add the eggs, vanilla and sugar and stir to blend.
Stir in walnuts, flour, and pinch of salt and mix only until incorporated.
Fill muffin cups, lined with foil liners, only half full.
Bake at 350* for 20 minutes or until just done – do NOT overbake.
A toothpick inserted into the center will come out not wet, not dry, but very slightly sticky. These freeze extremely well in waxed paper lined, airtight plastic containers.
My favorite chocolate dessert of all time has to be Kahlua fudge brownie pie. Absolutely decadent.

My favourite will be chocolate con churros that I had in Spain. Deep fried dough with ultra thick hot chocolate sauce. Who wouldn’t love them? Especially good when eating at the patio with the perfect weather people watching. Finger licking good!
One more thing…I love Scharffen Berger. So much do I love it that I have been scheming for for years to make it to the Bernachon Chocolate in Lyon where founder Robert Steinberg interned. Bernachon exists like some kind of crazy chocolate Shangri-La…so hard to get the chocolate…so far away…so fabulous!

Hard to pick a favorite chocolate dessert. I suppose it would depend on the time of year, or the occasion. You can’t beat a chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream frosting for a birthday cake. A steamy cup of hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows are a must after cross country skiing. But of course, it is the chocolate chip cookie with pecans that will always please on any afternoon.

My favorite is French Silk Pie with graham crust. My mom makes it for special occasions. It’s the kind that you only take a little piece, although you’d like to eat the whole pie because it is THAT good, but you end up laying on the couch regardless, savoring the flavor and feeling the sugar run through your head.
I’m partial to my mother’s chocolate almond cake. Not quite flourless, but almost, and it’s super dense and rich. Definitely one of those desserts you want to be able to eat more of, since it’s so delicious, but it’s so very rich you can only eat so much at once.
Her hazelnut cocoa macaroons are a close second, but the cake wins for pure indulgence.
I love me a good black forest cake. Had one every birthday growing up in PA.
My very favorite dessert made with chocolate is Dark Chocolate Cake with a milk chocolate mousse on the top layer, dark chocolate buttercream in the two bottom layers and a dark chocolate ganache on top. Decorated with raspberries and served with the best Kona coffee (or Jamaican in a perfect world) and a dab of whipped cream. MMMMMmmmmmmmm!
I love all things chocolate, but my favorite would have to be a “cake” my chef sister makes. It has a rich, chewy chocolate brownie-like bottom with thick layer of whipped cream cheese peanut butter goodness with loads of chopped peanut butter cups on top. She then adds additonal cups as decoration. It is the richest, most delicious creation I’ve ever had. :)

My grandpa has made a dark chocolate mousse since I was a kid. Once I was sick at my grandparents and sleeping on the couch. From what I’m told, when he brought the chocolate mousse out I woke up, ate the mousse, licked the bowl and fell back asleep. I still don’t remember waking up and doing this, but if I did it was worth it!
Salted Chocolate Caramel Tart – it took me 3 tries to get it right, but totally worth it!
It’s not fair to pick just ONE!?!?! That’s cruelty! I mean, chocolate chip cookies so basic but so beautifully delicious. Fudge swirled with peanut butter. Oh yeah. Tiger chocolate (peanut butter & white chocolate). Nice!!! My homemade ooey gooey chocolate brownies… oh yes! Brownie caramel cheese cake… to die for. But I think THE VERY BEST, the one that makes sadness a thing of yesterday would just HAVE to be salted caramel with chocolate drizzles. YUM!!

My favourite chocolate dessert is chocolate lasagna. Layers made of chocolate cake spread as thin as you can get it without seeing the bottom of the pan through it, and a filling of whipped cream and mascarpone cheese. Chunks of chocolate make for a great textural surprise inside and really shows off the smoothness of the whipped mascarpone filling. It is wicked good, and is guaranteed to impress a crowd.

My favorite chocolate recipe is dark chocolate pots de creme. I’ve found a great base recipe now, and I love adding extras to keep it interesting…a splash or bourbon or espresso, bits of candied citrus, and in the summer I like to top them with strawberry preserves and a bit of basil.
