Scharffen Berger Chocoholic Overdose – Kind of a Huge Giveaway

Scharffen Berger Chocolate - Chocoholic Overdose

The entry period for the Scharffen Berger Chocoholic Overdose giveaway is now over. Thanks to all for sharing your favorite chocolate desserts! Check back in a bit to find out who’s getting away with the haul…

The giveaways just keep getting better and better, don’t they?

This one needs no introduction so we’re just going to dive into the details of what’s included in the Scharffen Berger Chocoholic’s Overdose…

Starting from the top:

  1. Chocolate Tasting Squares Box ~ 48 squares of extra dark, bittersweet and semi sweet chocolate. This box alone would make a good gift! To yourself.
  2. Apron ~ so you don’t get chocolate all over yourself (not that that’s a bad thing)
  3. Cocoa Powder ~ Two canisters of cocoa powder, one sweetened (to drink!) and one unsweetened (for baking!)
  4. Baking Bars ~ Two baking bars, one 70% cacao, which you can eat straight, and one 99% cacao, which you could also eat, but that would make you insane, so we recommend you use this one for baking.
  5. Essence of Chocolate Cookbook ~ We could have give this cookbook away by itself, it’s so gorgeous with almost 400 pages of chocolate recipes, from “intensely chocolate” Chocolate Chocolate Cake to “hint of chocolate” White Velvet Cake (a recipe contributed by Rose Levy Berenbaum!). And it’s not just sweets. There are savory recipes for soups, barbcue and, of all things, salad. As strange as it may sound, we also love the fittingly luxurious feel of the thick, matte pages.
  6. Cacao Nibs ~ Perfectly roasted cocoa beans that have been broken down into little crunchy bits. They’re supposed to be good substitutes for roasted nuts or chocolate chips in baking, but we eat them straight.
  7. Chocolate Baking Chunks ~ One bag of semi-sweet at 62% cacao and one bag of bittersweet at 70% cacao
  8. Chocolate Bars ~ Eight bars of Scharffen Berger chocolate. There might have been nine bars.

Okay. Yeah, so there were nine bars. *blush*
Scharffen Berger Chocolate - Nibby Dark Chocolate
Anyway.

How amazing is all of this?! We’re not sure what it’s worth, but we’re estimating the total value to be, oh, about, a bazillion dollars.

How to Enter this Giveaway

This is a quick and easy giveaway. There is one step:

Leave a comment on this post with your favorite CHOCOLATE dessert.

We’re going to pick the “winner” randomly from the comments, so it only matters that you do comment. The fact that you don’t like chocolate is a whole different issue that you’re going to have to face by yourself.

Just to get things started on the giveaway, we’ll go first.

Does a Chocolate Martini count as dessert? Yes, yes it absolutely does.

Good luck! The deadline to enter is midnight Sunday December 12. Make sure to enter your email address in the space provided address so we can contact you if you’re chosen!

And don’t forget the other giveaways that are still going on: Ralph Brennan’s New Orleans Seafood Cookbook

These chocolate products look amazing! I’m probably one of the most indecisive people, so my favorite foods change on a daily basis. My current favorite chocolate desserts have to be chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate mousse. Yum!

Carly December 9, 2010 at 8:06 pm

So hard to pick one favorite, but I think two of the most divine chocolate desserts are Nigella Lawson’s “Chocohotopots” and Ina Garten’s Brownie Pudding. Both ridiculously chocolate-y and decadent.

I have quite a few diet restrictions and high standards for food. So when I created the perfect non-dairy and gluten-free fudgy brownie with chewy edges and a crisp top, I fell in complete chocolate love. Scharffen Berger helped me do this. When I haven’t found it in the stores and tried to remake the brownies with an alternative chocolate they always fall short. I would love love looooove this amazing prize!

SO HARD TO CHOOSE!!
I’m debating between good old CHEWY brownies (not cakey, could be a little fudgy, but has to be chewy!!), or good old double chocolate white chocolate chip cookies (has to be a bit undercooked so it’s CHEWY). Did I mention I like chewy?!

Haven’t had much experience with fancier chocolate recipes/desserts, though I did see someone mention La Bete Noire in the comments and I looked it up and it looks easy. Will have to give it a try!

Kate December 9, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Jean December 9, 2010 at 9:56 pm

It would have to be Ina Garten’s Double Chocolate Cake. It’s got rich, chocolate flavor and it’s so moist! It’s a crowd pleaser!

Maggie December 9, 2010 at 9:57 pm

The problem is how to choose only ONE chocolate dessert to be my favorite! I choose…ummm…er, uh….oh dear….ok – CHOCOLATE MOUSSE!!!

Sandra DeRosia December 9, 2010 at 11:21 pm

My favorite chocolate treat is a cup of extremely high quality cocoa warmed with organic 2% milk and a dash of Himalayan pink salt. The trick to a good cup of hot cocoa is really the chocolate. Most brands you’ll find in a grocery store have sugar as the number one ingredient and cocoa is listed at 5 or 6! Read the labels and reconnect with a REAL cup of hot cocoa this winter!

Liz December 9, 2010 at 11:27 pm

I add a pinch of cinnamon and use hot water to keep the fat low. Finish it off with a bit of soy creamer and it’s richly satisfying while also being super healthy. Those chocolate anti-oxidants are great for keeping the skin wrinkle free too!

Barbara Nickerson December 10, 2010 at 10:40 am

Our family has two big ‘chocoholics’ – the first is almost 21 and the second is 6, so our collection of chocolate recipes include Chocolate Bread Pudding, Chocolate Kahlua Cake, Mississpii Mud Cake, Chocolate Burbon Pecan Pie, Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Fudgy Brownies (currently in the kitchen). No holiday is complete without something chocolate to complete the dessert menu. New favorite hot chocolate for everyone is Mexican Hot Chocolate that we make from scratch, with homemade marshmellows. Off to have some Nutella with my coffee!!!

Hilary December 10, 2010 at 11:02 am

Oh wow, my favourite chocolate dessert is definitely nanaimo bars. Hands down.
What, you say? You’ve never heard of them? A Canadian treat, they were started in Western Canada in a town called Nanaimo.
It’s kind of like a triple layer bar: the bottom layer is a chocolately coconut crust, the middle layer is a creamy icing, and the top is a thick layer of hardened chocolate! YUM!

joy December 10, 2010 at 11:02 am

Chocolate cookies with white chocolate chips……heavenly, with the best of both.

vanessa December 10, 2010 at 1:17 pm

My favourite chocolate dessert…. is drinking chocolate! Is there seriously anything more decadent than DRINKING the stuff? I’m not talking about that powdered crap or even that gourmet hot chocolate… I’m talking about chocolate that has been melted, mixed with a little cream and milk, brown sugar, vanilla, and MAYBE a dash of Kahlua and Frangelico for good measure. Blend it until frothy and serve in TINY espresso cups or you’ll get a stomach ache haha. Although I always manage to make it to seconds <3

Coincidentally, it’s called Chocolate Overdose Cake. It’s a 3-layer wedge of chocolate: a fudgey brownie bottom, chocolate mousse filling, topped with a layer of chocolate cake, and coated and decorated with rich ganache. It’s like 2.5lbs of chocolate. Word.

Jade December 10, 2010 at 8:02 pm

For me it’s got to be a simple scoop of perfectly creamy, dark chocolate ice cream. (Potentially with a mountain of whipped cream on top.) Of course … the mountain of chocolate chip cookies my flatmate made for a Christmas party tonight sure look just as tempting…

Pepperpot December 11, 2010 at 3:35 am

Sharman Kobayashi December 11, 2010 at 7:45 am

I got this recipe 30 years ago when my children were in pre-school and it has been my go-to recipe for a chocolate treat ever since!

Brownie Cupcakes from Jack & Jill Playschool

2 cubes or ½ lb. butter
5 oz. Semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 c walnuts, toasted until fragrant, then chopped coarsely
1 c flour
1 ¾ c sugar
4 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
pinch salt

Melt butter with chocolate chips over low heat in a medium saucepan. Remove from heat but leave in the saucepan.
Add the eggs, vanilla and sugar and stir to blend.
Stir in walnuts, flour, and pinch of salt and mix only until incorporated.
Fill muffin cups, lined with foil liners, only half full.
Bake at 350* for 20 minutes or until just done – do NOT overbake.
A toothpick inserted into the center will come out not wet, not dry, but very slightly sticky. These freeze extremely well in waxed paper lined, airtight plastic containers.

Rich chocolate ice cream is my favorite. Throw in a little Bailey’s and yes darling, I’ll marry you!

Cherry December 11, 2010 at 8:10 am

My favourite will be chocolate con churros that I had in Spain. Deep fried dough with ultra thick hot chocolate sauce. Who wouldn’t love them? Especially good when eating at the patio with the perfect weather people watching. Finger licking good!

HeatherS December 11, 2010 at 8:13 am

One more thing…I love Scharffen Berger. So much do I love it that I have been scheming for for years to make it to the Bernachon Chocolate in Lyon where founder Robert Steinberg interned. Bernachon exists like some kind of crazy chocolate Shangri-La…so hard to get the chocolate…so far away…so fabulous!

Margo December 11, 2010 at 8:25 am

Molten chocolate lava cake, served warm – with ice cream, of course ;)

Donna Kelly December 11, 2010 at 8:26 am

Best chocolate dessert? Well, lava cake is up there…but so is brownie batter by the spoonful…

Hannah December 11, 2010 at 8:44 am

This is the most challenging question I’ve had to answer in a long time… but it would probably be these amazing double-chocolate cookies I found via Tastespotting. They’re the perfect combination of bitter and sweet.

chocolate! December 11, 2010 at 8:58 am

mmm…I’d have to say hot brownies with icecream!

Amanda December 11, 2010 at 8:59 am

I’d have to go with Chocolate truffle cookies. They are so small that you just don’t expect the intense chocolate taste that explodes from them.

Sarah December 11, 2010 at 9:01 am

Chocolate mousse is definitely my favorite. My mom’s recipe of course.

Elaine December 11, 2010 at 9:06 am

Straight! Just a single piece of dark chocolate to melt away in my mouth.

karen day December 11, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Asking me to pick a favorite chocolate dessert is like asking me to pick my favorite child. If it’s chocolate, really, really chocolately, and gooey, and rich (I may have to take a second here) I’m in heaven.

karen day December 11, 2010 at 12:07 pm

For all you adventurous chocoholics out there I have something you have GOT to try! The Mexican Hot Chocolate Gourmet Marshmallows from Daybreak Farms – http://www.daybreakfarmstore.com. They are fantastic!!! Rich chocolate in a soft, fluffy marshmallow, and a little heat from the spices. These are seriously GREAT.

Erin December 11, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Dorie Greenspan’s World Peace Cookies and my very favorite chocolate to use with the recipe is Scharffen Berger. I’ve gotten marriage proposals from the combination of the two!

my favorite chocolate dessert?! how do i even pick just one?!? i suppose ill have to go with homemade hot chocolate with some homemade marshmallows… mhmmmm

Shelly December 11, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Hard to pick a favorite chocolate dessert. I suppose it would depend on the time of year, or the occasion. You can’t beat a chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream frosting for a birthday cake. A steamy cup of hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows are a must after cross country skiing. But of course, it is the chocolate chip cookie with pecans that will always please on any afternoon.

Lindsay December 11, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Liquid truffles, the lavender chocolate flavor is awesome.

Gayle December 11, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Teresa December 11, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Absolutely it is brownies!

Layne December 11, 2010 at 5:40 pm

My favorite is French Silk Pie with graham crust. My mom makes it for special occasions. It’s the kind that you only take a little piece, although you’d like to eat the whole pie because it is THAT good, but you end up laying on the couch regardless, savoring the flavor and feeling the sugar run through your head.

AJ December 11, 2010 at 5:55 pm

I’m partial to my mother’s chocolate almond cake. Not quite flourless, but almost, and it’s super dense and rich. Definitely one of those desserts you want to be able to eat more of, since it’s so delicious, but it’s so very rich you can only eat so much at once.

Her hazelnut cocoa macaroons are a close second, but the cake wins for pure indulgence.

Jen December 11, 2010 at 6:01 pm

I love me a good black forest cake. Had one every birthday growing up in PA.

Noreen Peters December 11, 2010 at 6:23 pm

My very favorite dessert made with chocolate is Dark Chocolate Cake with a milk chocolate mousse on the top layer, dark chocolate buttercream in the two bottom layers and a dark chocolate ganache on top. Decorated with raspberries and served with the best Kona coffee (or Jamaican in a perfect world) and a dab of whipped cream. MMMMMmmmmmmmm!

Sarah December 11, 2010 at 6:42 pm

I love all things chocolate, but my favorite would have to be a “cake” my chef sister makes. It has a rich, chewy chocolate brownie-like bottom with thick layer of whipped cream cheese peanut butter goodness with loads of chopped peanut butter cups on top. She then adds additonal cups as decoration. It is the richest, most delicious creation I’ve ever had. :)

stacey lindsay December 11, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Dorie’s World Peace cookies! Salted Chocolate is the best!

Kristen December 11, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Jacqui December 11, 2010 at 8:15 pm

My grandpa has made a dark chocolate mousse since I was a kid. Once I was sick at my grandparents and sleeping on the couch. From what I’m told, when he brought the chocolate mousse out I woke up, ate the mousse, licked the bowl and fell back asleep. I still don’t remember waking up and doing this, but if I did it was worth it!

dawn December 11, 2010 at 8:28 pm

Salted Chocolate Caramel Tart – it took me 3 tries to get it right, but totally worth it!

Christina December 11, 2010 at 8:38 pm

It’s not fair to pick just ONE!?!?! That’s cruelty! I mean, chocolate chip cookies so basic but so beautifully delicious. Fudge swirled with peanut butter. Oh yeah. Tiger chocolate (peanut butter & white chocolate). Nice!!! My homemade ooey gooey chocolate brownies… oh yes! Brownie caramel cheese cake… to die for. But I think THE VERY BEST, the one that makes sadness a thing of yesterday would just HAVE to be salted caramel with chocolate drizzles. YUM!!

Filled with mousse cocolate chunks and covered in ganache.
even a chocolate bar will do the trick.

Cat December 12, 2010 at 10:25 am

cinnamon hazelnut brownies. gooey and delicious :)

Julia December 12, 2010 at 10:36 am

My favourite chocolate dessert is chocolate lasagna. Layers made of chocolate cake spread as thin as you can get it without seeing the bottom of the pan through it, and a filling of whipped cream and mascarpone cheese. Chunks of chocolate make for a great textural surprise inside and really shows off the smoothness of the whipped mascarpone filling. It is wicked good, and is guaranteed to impress a crowd.

Alison December 12, 2010 at 11:25 am

Layered milk and dark chocolate mousse. I have an amazingly simple recipe that never fails to “wow” my guests!

Rina December 12, 2010 at 11:32 am

Schottischer himbertorte (dark chocolate sponge, raspberry topping) at the Opernpalais Cafe. Still think about it, 4 years after visiting Berlin.

Glenda Hammond December 12, 2010 at 11:36 am

Dark chocolate orange cake :o)

kato December 12, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I’m savoring super dark, rich, chocolate ice cream with toasted almond bits, toasted coconut flakes and chocolate nibs. Though chocolate in any form will do – decadent chocolate cake, brownies, creamy chocolate mousse, crunchy and gooey chocolate chip cookies, chocolate covered chewy nougats – the list is endless. It’s a basic food group all by itself, global in nature and admired for its benefits both physical and psychological. OMG I just can’t get enough CHOCOLATE!!! Oh-oh It’s melting….. :)~

Jessica Stephens December 12, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Courtney December 12, 2010 at 8:14 pm

My favorite chocolate recipe is dark chocolate pots de creme. I’ve found a great base recipe now, and I love adding extras to keep it interesting…a splash or bourbon or espresso, bits of candied citrus, and in the summer I like to top them with strawberry preserves and a bit of basil.

Chris December 12, 2010 at 8:36 pm

Boring, perhaps, but I’m a sucker for just good, plain chocolate.

Following that, chocolate ice cream. Or ice cream accompanying good, plain chocolate :D

[in terms of more high-effort, *created* chocolate desserts... this will probably always be the love of my life]
