Heirloom tomatoes – the fruits of the summer season & bounty of our home garden brings endless delight to the palate (and soul). Uses are endless, creativity is limitless and eating these fresh treats is life long addicting!
I know they might not count as a “fruit” but I could eat blueberries for every meal and never tire of them. If I must go with an actual fruit I’d have to be boring and go with an Apple.
Papaya! The really sweet, right off the tree kind. Reminds me of home.

I only started eating tomatoes a few years ago and only recently discovered the gorgeous look and taste of these amazing beauties, only to realize our parents (mine and my husbands) have been planting and saving seeds year after year of these big (sometimes huge) delicious breeds. When my mother was pregnant with me in 1980, she craved a small yellow Korean melon…. that wasn’t yet available in the United States! When they finally appeared in supermarkets, my father bought three, at $3 each. The checkout woman asked, “You know how much they are?” He nodded and said yes. “Love is expensive,” she said, and to this day chamae hold a special place in my heart.
All of these sound SO good. I think watermelon is my favorite, though: I can’t think of a single thing I want to eat more on a scorching, humid summer day than a thick slice of sweet, crisp watermelon. Wish they were in season; I’d have some right now!

This is a hard one, but I’ll have to go with tomatoes. Any kind as long as they’re not those mealy grocery store types. Fresh heirlooms, tart or sweet cherry, big beefsteaks. Drizzled with dressing, baked on to bread or sprinkled with just a hit of salt and pepper. Summer perfection!

My absolute favorite fruit is a bosch pear because when it is perfectly ripe and I put it in the fridge for a little while to get nice and cold biting into it is like drinking a tall glass of ice cold pear juice. With the first bite your mouth just fills with so much bursting pear flavor! It’s incredible.
My favorite fruit is seasonal, just like fruits are seasonal. I’m a harvester at heart, so my favorites involve a little labor and love. Spring has to be rhubarb. Summer has too many good choices, I’m been a berry-lover, but for today I’ll go with a deep-red, succulent, sweet, late summer raspberry. Fall, easy, either a crisp honeycrisp or a gingery gingergold apple! I can’t say I’ve harvested grapefruits myself during the winter, but I very much appreciate those who do.

White peaches ripe from the farmers market
Eggplant… I don’t know what it is, but I simply cannot walk by a tight one without buying it. I grill ‘em, roast them, saute them, eat them w/yogurt, layer them with fresh tomatoes, pickle them, put them between flatbread… it’s a problem. Not that I mind….

I can’t choose just one. My three favorite are avocadoes, blueberries, and mangoes. I can eat them every day and not get tired of them.

I think my go-to fruit is a honeycrisp apple because it is just so classic but it can be so versatile to bake or cook with. My favorite fruit on the more exotic side would probably have to be figs because, for starters, I had never tried one until last summer! But I also love their ability to be used with sweet and savory dishes… plus they are so beautiful just to look at!

As a vegan it’s almost impossible to choose one favorite fruit! But I would have to say a crisp, tart organic granny smith apple. It’s so versitle! I can eat it as is, add it to savory meals, baked goods and use it as natural sweetener to any of the fresh juices I make!

blackberries. but not every blackberry. blackberries when they are a little bit soft and sweet but still tart. it’s about 1 in 20 that this perfect combination occurs.
Mustard greens. Sometimes they’re hard to find here. Once, after not being able to find any for nearly a year, I got so excited to find them again that I did an endzone touchdown-type celebration in the middle of the produce section and got a lot of weird looks from other shoppers. so worth it, though.

My absolute favorite vegetable has to be the tomato. They’re sweet, they’re savory, and they’re everything in between! They are my wonder fruit/veggie (because I have to admit I’m not sure which it is), especially with a little dab of salt. Really, my favorite thing about tomatoes is that no matter how rainy a day it is, the perfect tomato always tastes like sunshine.

Wow, this cookbook is definitely going on my birthday list. Currently I have been on a kiwi + kale kick. I eat the kiwis whole, with the skin on them, like an apple. The kale I tear up, sprinkle with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and bake into chips. So delicious.

White Georgia Belle peaches are the best!! Of course, travel to a “pick your own” (like The Peach Tree in S.C.) and go into the orchard to select the ones you want. Just the smell of these peaches takes me back in time to the years I picked them with my Mom and Dad…wonderful memories….
