So even though it’s not technically fall yet, we are officially in back-to-school season, unless you’re on the quarter system and start in October, which never made sense to us…
Anyway.
Along with bus schedules, backpacks and Trapper Keepers (wait, do they still make those?!), there are books for back-to-school.
In our case, of course, cookbooks.
We have a shelf full of cookbooks that we’ve been reading and reviewing over the last few months, a sort of Summer Reading List, if you will. Some of them good, some of them great and a few that are, well, let’s just say that we won’t say anything about them and keep those stored in the TasteSpotting garage.
The good ones, though? We’re giving away! Starting with what could be considered a reference text, The Complete America’s Test Kitchen TV Show Cookbook.
If you know anything about America’s Test Kitchen, you know that this book isn’t about getting a fast and easy meal on the table for busy people, it isn’t about hunting down exotic erotic recipes from far-away places, and it isn’t about one ingredient cooked 150 different ways.
The Complete America’s Test Kitchen TV Show Cookbook focuses its 700+ photo-filled pages on the basics of real home cooking (not that any of the above isn’t real home cooking!). They test recipes time and time and time again until they figure out every possible way a dish could go wrong, then explain what and why works for things like roast chicken, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate cake. Once you understand why something works, you know how to change things up when you make it again. And because “American” food is a lot of things, there are chapters on Italian American foods, French foods, Tex-Mex, “Diner foods,” copying classic “Chinese take-out” dishes and of course, barbecue. There are also kitchen tips, tricks, and little snippets behind the scenes of the America’s Test Kitchen TV show.
As a good reference foundation to which you’ll return over and over again, The Complete America’s Test Kitchen TV Show Cookbook is kind of like Homeroom in TasteSpotting School.
